BFI Musicals: Cabaret National Tour

Live Cinema UK were delighted to take part in BFI Musicals. BFI Musicals celebrated the spectacle and craft of Musicals on film. A Nation-wide cinema season, led by the BFI, the Independent Cinema Office and the Film Audience Network, supported by funds from the National Lottery. Live Cinema UK have delivered leading events to audiences of over 20,000 across previous BFI Blockbuster seasons including Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder, Love, Black Star and Comedy Genius. This year, we offered three incredible immersive, all-singing all-dancing events to venues nationwide.

In partnership with Make A Scene, we produced a national interactive tour of Queer musical classic Cabaret following on from our successful Hedwig and the Angry Inch National tour earlier in the BFI Musicals season.

What if we were on the brink of living in a far right, fascist society? What would that mean for thriving queer people? The past is closer than you think. Queer musical classic Cabaret was back on the big screen with sickening live performances throughout the night, reinterpretations of classic songs from the film, cocktails, decadence, dancing, singing and audience participation. Trans showgirl and Make A Scene hostess Grace Oni Smith starred as Sally Bowles with Darren Pritchard as EmCee and his black vogue family The House of Ghetto as the Kit Kat Club girls.

These screenings followed in the tradition of Make a Scene’s previous interactive screenings, such as Showgirls and Little Shop of Horrors.

Berlin 1930, a destroyed economy, rampant unemployment, and political havoc. Into this chaos, enter an American cabaret dancer, a rich German politician, a young Jewish man struggling with his identity, a British teacher, and the all-knowing, all-seeing Master of Ceremonies. An iconic, incredibly stylish study of the hedonism and sexual ambiguity of pre-war Berlin, Cabaret was a huge, multi Oscar-winning hit for choreographer and director Bob Fosse in 1972 and made Liza Minnelli (who won Best Actress) a star.
